This picture comes from Kapulua, in the Northwest part of Maui. After we completed our pineapple tour on Tuesday, April 28, we took a short drive on the Honoapiilani Highway around the northwest portion of the island where the highway turns toward the east. On our way back toward Kapalua, we stopped at a view point to capture this picture of Kapalua with Lanai in the distant background. 4/23: Arriving in Maui Select the logo below to return to miketilson.com. |
Our vacation in paradise started with an early morning wakeup call in Phoenix. We departed Sky Harbor Airport around 8:15 am. The pilot immediately alerted us to a longer than normal flight time as strong headwinds would add about an extra 30 minutes to the scheduled six hour flight into Honolulu. I was thankful I didn't chose the first available connecting flight to Maui, as we would have certainly missed it. I chose a flight just about a half hour later, and we immediately walked onto our connecting flight (if we had been on the first flight, we probably would have just ended up on this flight as it was about half full). A short 20 minute flight later, we landed in Kahului for our week long vacation on the Valley Isle. ![]() By mid-afternoon we were checked into our hotel in Wailea. I found a pretty good deal at the Grand Wailea. Spread out over 40 acres, the hotel featured a large complex of swimming pools and water slides. Like other hotels in the area, the hotel featured a wide selection of restaurants and beautiful gardens. Our room was located on the top floor of the Molokini wing with a great view of the ocean, west Maui, and Lanai. ![]() |
The Grand Wailea is spread out over 40 acres in sunny Wailea. One of the reasons we chose to stay there was because of the large number of swimming pools, most of which were connected to each other by small water slides. There were a couple longer water slides as well that we enjoyed during our trip. ![]() |
